Meena Kumari- The Chhoti Bahu of 'Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam'


The character of Chhoti Bahu in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam is a lonely suffering wife, who took to alcohol to please her philandering husband. This role was played by Meena Kumari and is considered one of the most brilliant portrayals in Hindi cinema by any actress.
The film was based on the 1953 Bengali novel, Saheb Bibi Golam by Bimal Mitra. Guru Dutt was very sure that Meena Kumari is the only actress of that time who could do justice to that role, So he approached her to do this role. Meena Kumari was very busy and had no dates for Guru Dutt that was in 1958.
Waheeda Rehman wanted to play the role of Chhoti Bahu. She even did a screen test, but the photographer V.K. Murthy realized that she was too young for the mature role. So the role of Jaba was given to her.
Guru Dutt then tried an Indian girl living and acting in London but "she was entirely unsuitable". Desperate, he completed the entire film by 1961 except for the role of Chhoti Bahu. 
Before selecting another heroine, he once again contacted Meena Kumari he went to her home and offered the role again. By now, the rift in her relationship with Amrohi had widened and she was taking on more films. When Guru Dutt arrived at her home, he found she was away shooting and left the script with her sister, Khursheed Bano. When Meena Kumari returned, she was shocked to find the script of Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. She started reading it immediately and called Dutt at 2 a.m. to tell him that she would play the role of Chhoti Bahu.
Meena Kumari had one request for the legendary filmmaker. She asked for the film to be shot in a linear way, as the story progresses so that she could map the changes in her character. This was the first time both of them had shot a film in this way, from start to finish, exactly in keeping with the timeline of the script.
The film was shot at Dhankuria Mansion near Calcutta, but Meena Kumari didn't come to the haveli, its interiors were recreated on a set in Bombay. She gave consecutive forty five days for the shooting of this film.
 As the film progressed, she devoted herself to this character. Vinod Mehta who wrote the Biography of Meena Kumari quotes a passage from her diary where she writes, "This woman is troubling me a great deal. All-day long-and a good part of the night-it is nothing else but Chhoti Bahu's helplessness. Chhoti Bahu's sorrows, Chhoti Bahu's smiles, Chhoti Bahu's hopes, Chhoti Bahu's Tribulations, Chhoti Bahu's endurance, Chhoti Bah's ... Chhoti Bahu's... Chhoti Bahu... Oh! I am sick of it."
The character of Chhoti Bahu was seen as a gamble for Meena Kumari given that the traditional representation of an Indian woman up until that point was of a virginal woman. A woman who could drink herself to self-destruction? 
She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for this role. In fact, she was nominated for all the three nominations for this category No one before and after this got all the nomination for a particular category.

50 Years of SAFAR


This film was released on 31st July 1970. It was the tenth highest-grossing film of that year. Rajesh Khanna was the hero, who was at the peak of his career. This being one of the seventeen consecutive hit films between 1969 and 1971It won one Filmfare Awards and four BFJA AwardsThe film stars Ashok KumarRajesh KhannaSharmila Tagore, and Feroz Khan in lead roles. 
This was the second film of Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore Jodi, they appeared together in many films after this film. Sharmila was nominated for the Filmfare Best Actress Award for this film. This is also one of the movies for which Rajesh Khanna shall be remembered forever. 
Safar  is a story of common people grappling with staggering challenges and compromises. Sharmila Tagore plays a doctor she works under the guidance of Dr. Chandra (Ashok Kumar), who tells her that however hard doctors might try, sometimes a patient wouldn't survive. Rajesh Khanna is a cancer patient. Both of them studied together in college.  Though he admires Neela(Sharmila Tagore) very much, he never talks about love or marriage. Everyone thinks that it's because of his financial status, but it is later revealed that he has terminal cancer.
Feroz Han plays Shekhar,, he falls in love with Neela. He goes to propose marriage with her and meets her brother, Kalidas, but is told that he should instead meet with Avinash. So Shekhar introduces himself to Avinash, tells him of his intentions, and Avinash instantly approves of him, and subsequently, Shekhar and Neela are married. 
Neela regularly visits her brother's house where Avinash was a frequent visitor. Shekhar slowly grows suspicious of Neela and Avinash and asks his younger brother to spy on her. Shekhar comes to the conclusion that Neela is in love with Avinash and confronts her, they quarrel, he drinks his medicine and passes out. The next day the police arrest Neela on the charge of murder. With Avinash nowhere to be found, Neela has now to face life behind bars - or even the death sentence.
The soundtrack of the film contains 5 songs. The music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji, with lyrics authored by Indeevar.

'Jiya Jale Jaan Jale' - The Creation of Three Geniuses


This song from 1998 film 'Dil Se' is written by Gulzar, composed by A R Rehman and sung by Lata Mangeshkar. This is the first song Lata Mangeshkar sang for A R Rehman'This song was recorded in Chennai in the recording studio of Rehman. It was the first time Lara Di was recording outside Mumbai.
Gulzar in his book has mentioned this song. He said that Lata Ji had not met Rehman before and also not familiar with his style, she asked Gulzar saheb to be present there at the time of recording. He was not only present there but also accompanied her to Chennai. Rehman received her at the airport and took her and Gulzar saheb to the studio. Reman has many studios in Chennai, this was his first studio. Rehman explained the tune to Lata Ji and asked her to sing. Nowadays composers ask singers to sing one line and record it but Lata Ji told him that she will sing the full song in one take but before that she wants a rehearsal. Rehman agreed and took her to the singer's cabin The cabin had a glass on the front side and no glass on the side walls. Unfortunately, Lata Ji could not see the mixing desk from there, nor could she see the musicians. That was a big problem for her, as she was used to having eye contact with the composer. 
After one rehearsal, Lataji called Gulzar saheb to her side and said  ‘Gulzarji, it feels as though I am blind.’ You kindly sit in front of me. so he sat on a stool outside the cabin’s glass door from where he could see both Lataji and Rahman. 
Despite the fact she recorded the whole song in one session, the song itself was not finalized. Rahman then worked on it for about ten days. He usually works out the instrumentation etc., and so the song evolves slowly into its final form.
The next day returned back to Mumbai. After a week Rehman made a call to Gulzar saheb and said ‘Gulzar Saab, I have recorded a male and female chorus and inserted it in between the antaras. The words are in Malayalam, will you translate them into Hindi?
He played the song to him over the phone. It sounded very beautiful, so I suggested we keep the chorus in Malayalam. It’s the impact of the overall sound that matters. Malayalam has its own sound and folk songs have their own kind of music. Lataji and the chorus sounded wonderful.
Another interesting thing about the song was its lyrics. The song is about the description of a wedding night, Lata Ji usually not sing a song that has anything to do with sex or includes vulgar words or expressions. So it was decided that it will not be picturized as a typical wedding night. 
This song was picturized on Pritty Zinta and Shahrukh Khan on an outdoor location.

The Hit Songs Picturized on Johny Walker


In an era when star billing in song picturizations was reserved only for the hero and heroine, Johnny Walker had a special status. He had one or more songs in every film. The most popular Sar Jo Tera Chakraye from Pyaasa, Yeh hai Bombay Meri Jaan from C I D .and many songs were the attraction of the films produced in the 50s and 60s.I am posting those songs which were hit but now forgotten.
He made his debut from the 1951 film Baazi and worked in almost 300 films in a career span of 40 years. The first time he appeared in a song in 1954 film Taxi Driver with Dev Anand."Mastram Ban Ke Zindagi Ke din Guzar De' and the next year in  Mr and Mrs 55,  'Jane Kahan Mera Jigar Gaya Ji' After that in almost every film one song was picturized on him. Most of the songs picturized on him became very popular. The credit has to go to Mohammed Rafi who gave playback to Johnny Walker in most of his movies. When Rafi sings for Walker, you only listen to Walker and not to Rafi. Johnny Walker’s memories will continue to be alive through his movies and songs.

The Positive Roles Played by Amjad Khan


We all know Amjad Khan(12 November 1940 – 27 July 1992)  as Gabbar Singh. He enjoyed popularity for villainous roles in many Hindi films, It was Satyajit Ray, who changed his image in the 1977 film Shatranj Ke Khiladi. He played the helpless and deluded monarch Wajid Ali Shah, whose Kingdom, Avadh. After this role, Dev Anand gave him a positive role of Buta Singh in 1978 film Des Pardes. Gulzar also gave him the role of King Akbar in 1979 film Meera.
In 1980, he played the role of Inspector Amjad Khan in Qurbani and also sang a song. He played many positive roles in films such as Yaarana (1981) and Laawaris (1981) as Amitabh's friend and father respectively. He portrayed Vatsayana, in 1984 film Utsav. and playing comical characters in films such as Love StoryChameli Ki Shaadi (1986), and Maa Kasam (1986) In 'Love Story', he was nominated for this film as the Best Actor in a Supporting Role
In a career of two decades, he worked over 130 films, many regarded as Bollywood classics. Starting as a child artist, he became the topmost villain and later a character actor. Many of us do not know that he made his debut as an adult actor in Hindustan Ki Kasam (1973). 
He briefly ventured into direction too and made a couple of movies — Chor Police (1983) and Ameer Aadmi Gareeb Aadmi (1985).
He won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor – Dada (1980)Best Supporting Actor – Yaarana (1982), and  Best Comedian – Maa Kasam (1986)
Due to his increasing weight, he died of myocardial infarction in 1992 at the age of 51. Several of the films he had completed were released after his death, until 1996.

Yun Toh Humne Lakh Haseen Dekhe Hain- The Game Changer for Shammi Kapoor


This song and the film'Tumsa Nahin Dekha' was a gamechanger for Shammi Kapoor. Before this film, he had given 18 flop films in a row. This film was written by Nasir Hussain in keeping Dev Anand in mind. When Dev Anand refused to do this film, Shammi Kapoor was given this film.
This superhit song was written by Sahir Ludhianvi and composed by O P Nayyar well in advance keeping in mind Dev Anand. This was the only song written by Sahir in this film, he also opted out of the film because Dev Anand is not doing the film. Those days only Dev Anand had a flamboyant image and his earlier films (Munimji and Paying Guest)  with the producers had similar roles and were superhit.
The director of the film Nasir Hussain said in an interview that he was reluctant to take Shammi Kapoor as his hero for this film, it was his first film as a director and he wanted to work with an established hero. S Mukkharjee the producer suggested the name of Sunil Dutt after Dev Anand's refusal, ultimately the name of Shammi Kapoor emerged. 
Shammi Kapoor, who knew the story of the film and also knew that it will be a musical Rom-Com was desperate to grab this film to boost his sinking career. Nasir Hussain thought of changing the earlier image of Shammi Kapoor, asked him to remove his mustaches and change his hairstyle.
Shammi Kapoor told in an interview that this film was his dream film, he wanted this type of a role to show to the world his style. Those days no specialized choreographers were available for the songs. Heroes used to be sober or simpler in their songs. I had a great sense of dance and music, could improvise my own steps. So I asked Nasir Hussain to give him the recording of the song so that he could prepare for the song.
The day he got the recording of this song he went up to the terrace of his house at Chembur, he danced with the rhythm throughout the night., until every line, every beat had seeped into his body.
When the song was being picturized, Nasir Hussain gave him the full freedom to make his moves and steps. Everybody present there were surprised to see Shammi performing the song. Nasir Hussain was happy, he wanted Shammi Kapoor to do differently and he did it.
This is a version song, the other version was sung by Asha Bhonsle, the favorite of composer O P Nayyar.

50 Years of 'Tum Haseen Mein Jawan'


This is the first film of Dharmendra and Hema Malini. The two of them went on to work in a total of 28 films together and getting married along the way, in 1979. Both of them gave. 17 consecutive hits from 1970-1979 They also had another release together that same year "Sharafat" which was also a critical and commercial success.
This film was released on 24th July 1970 and completed silver jubilee in 3 cities. The film is entertainment,, in fact, was the beginning of Dharmendra's tryst with comedy which was later extended to Chupke Chupke, Sholay, etc. This is a typical 70s style 'feel good' movie which can be watched many times over.

Dharmendra plays a Naval Officer in the film. He has a number of affairs until he meets a beautiful girl Anuradha (Hema Malini) and falls in love with each other. Ranjeet(Pran) also admires her and wants to marry her. He informs Sunil and his mother that Anuradha has a child and she is deceiving them. Shocked to hear this, The child is kidnapped and then a lot of drama to locate the child. In the end, Sunil comes to know the truth behind the child in question which changes his life forever.

If you are a Dharmendra or Hema Malini's fan, you will enjoy this film. If you can overlook the plot holes you will also enjoy this film. There is  Rajendranath, who is in top form as the comedic sidekick. There is Helen, as usual with a great song and dance number The music is by Shankar Jaikishan The music numbers are a delight and they really save the film.

Mukesh- His songs on the Cricket Match inspired Chandrashekhar


Mukesh(22 July 1923- 27 August 1976)  is considered to be one of the most popular and acclaimed playback singers of the Hindi film industry. Among billions of his fans was the great spin & Googly bowler Bhagwat Chandrashekhar.
Mukesh was a favorite of renowned Indian spin-bowler Bhagwat Chandrasekhar. When the sound of a Mukesh song drifted to the pitch, Chandrasekhar's acknowledgment of the tribute would bring a roar from the crowd. Sunil Gavaskar wrote that sometimes he hummed a Mukesh tune on the field to inspire Chandra.
Chandra has had a special fondness for Mukesh's songs since his childhood. He
used to tune into them on Radio Ceylon every night, and often dreamt of actually
hearing him sing live someday. His opportunity came only after he joined the
Indian eleven in the early sixties, and started going to Bombay often for
matches.

He had the ambition to meet his idol once, which he told to his friend in Bombay, a jockey friend M J Raju, who happened to know Mukesh personally. He took a nervous and tongue-tied Chandra to a recording studio to listen to his idol live for the first time.
Mukesh was recording songs for a film called Jyot Jale.
After his first meeting, they became good friends, though Mukesh was quite older to him he respected Chandrashekhar. Mukesh was also not a Cricket crazy unlike Raj Kapoor or Dilip Kumar but he never showed his dislike for the game.
Chandra spent many quiet evenings dining with Mukesh's family, of whom only
Mukesh's son ever showed any interest in cricket. Sometimes, they would hit some
popular nightspot and dine out together, just the two of them. Then, Mukesh
would insist on driving Chandra back to the hotel. Occasionally, a cricketer
friend would accompany Chandra to meet Mukesh, but Chandra tried to keep his
treasured encounters with his friend as uncrowded as possible.
Chandrashekhar during an interview told "We only talked about his music, very little else,. We did not gossip about people in films or people in cricket. I lacked the knowledge to discuss the technicalities of his music with him, so we would just talk about the mood of a particular song, or what emotions we experienced on hearing it."
He had a great collection of Mukesh songs, almost 800 songs,'Yeh Mera Diwanapan' from Yahudi and the songs of Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behati Hai are a few of his favorite songs of Mukesh.
Sunil Gavaskar in an interview to Sony TV once said he was playing in a Ranji Match, Chandrashekhar was bowling him and beating him with his Googly a leg break, and following on through to the batsman. Not to sledge him but to ask, "Suna kya?" (Did you hear that?), as a Mukesh song wafted to the pitch from a spectator's transistor. Indians of an earlier generation took transistor radios to first-class matches - and listened to the running commentary. Often they tuned in to popular stations playing Bollywood songs. The volume was turned up when a Mukesh song came on during a match involving Chandra, or a song involving Sharmila Tagore when her husband, Tiger Pataudi, was in action. When players acknowledged the tribute, the crowd roared. It was a way of connecting with the stars in the pre-television and pre-selfie days.
Chandrashekhar was a Kannada speaking and didn't understand Hindi, he couldn't understand the lyrics of Mukesh songs but he liked his voice and tunes. Players of his era tell that Chandra was a quiet person and whenever you go to his room, one can always see him listening only to Mukesh songs.

The Story Behind the Song'Tadbeer Se Bigdi Hui Taqdeer Bana Le'


This super hit song from the Navketan's Baazi(1951) was written by Sahir Ludhianvi was a Ghazal to be picturized as per the situation but Dada Burman felt that in this situation Ghazal will not suit so he effortlessly turned it into a club song and changed the situation. 
This song was sung by Geeta Roy(Dutt) You would be surprised to note that Guru Dutt who was the director of the film fell in love with Geeta Roy during the recording of this song.
The mahurat of Baazi took place in 1950, the mahurat shot was taken on the sequence of this song. Everybody present there appreciated the song and its picturization. When the film was released, it became a super-duper hit, this song became so popular that audiences came repeatedly to watch just this song. 
This was the first shot of the career as a director for Guru Dutt obviously wanted to use his skills as a choreographer, learned at no less an institution than Uday Shankar’ for the mahurat shot. It was a delicately balanced scene. A long shot on the gangster’s moll, who was to seduce the hero. Yet she was obviously half in love with the debonair, dashingly handsome young man, and even as she sang to him to lure him along, she wished to warn him of the dangers lurking around.
An NRI musician Sadanand Warrier says that it was surprising that Dada who had no affection and knowledge of western music could use chromatic notes in the interlude of the song. Even the 'Hey Hey Hey Hey' is essentially chromatic movement.
In an interview, Dada Burman said that he deliberately used the phrase 'Hey Hey Hey Hey' to capture the feelings of being truly liberated as portrayed by the young woman. This song became a rage, it is said the people liked this song so much that cine-goers used to see the movie only for this song, many would walk out after the song ends.
S D Burman once said in Filmfare that.once he was fishing in Calcutta and was not able to catch a single fish, he set patiently for the whole day but couldn't catch any. Thoroughly disappointedly he was calling it a bad day, suddenly a boy of 10 years jumped into the pond and started singing his this Baazi song not knowing the composer of the song sitting there. That made his day It was the biggest catch of his life.

Rajendra Kumar- The Jubilee Kumar


It was between 1959 and 1966 that he reached the peak of his career and acquired the name of Jubilee Kumar which will be his for the times to come. There were times when he had six or seven films that had run for more than 25 weeks.
 He made his film debut with a small role in Kidar Sharma's 1950 film Jogan, opposite Dilip Kumar and Nargis.that was a Jubilee hit. His first film as a hero was 'Vachan'released after 5 years of his debut was also a Jubilee hit. 
He got further success with his supporting role in Mehboob Khan's blockbuster epic film Mother India in 1957 in which he played Nargis's character's son. His first major success as a romantic leading man was in Amit Saxena's musical Goonj Uthi Shehnai (1959), co-starring Ameeta.
He came at a time when Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, and Raj Kapoor were ruling the Bollywood, he established himself and gave one hit film by another hit. In 1961, he had 8 films released out of these 5 films were Jubilee hit. The first film released that year was Pyaar Ka Saagar, then Aas Ka Panchhi, which was also the first film of filmmaker J Omprakash,, Gharana was the next followed by Sasural and Dharamputra, all were hit.
Some of his hit films of 60s are  Dil Ek Mandir (1963), Mere Mehboob (1963), Sangam (1964), Ayee Milan Ki Bela (1964), Arzoo (1965), Suraj (1966), Talash (1969) and Ganwaar (1970). He received the Filmfare Nomination for Best Actor for Dil Ek Mandir (1963), Ayee Milan Ki Bela (1964), Arzoo (1965), and as Best Supporting Actor for Sangam (1964)
But just when he was at his zenith after Suraj, the sun began to slowly set on Rajendra's career. Whether it was Aman and Palki [1967], Jhuk Gaya Aasmaan, and Saathi [1968] or Shatranj [1969], his films were disappointments. By that time Rajesh Khanna emerged as Super Star, he started giving hits after hits.
Rajendra Kumar was born on 20th July 1929 and died on July 12, 1999, Rajendra Kumar, an ace at playing a doctor grappling with life-threatening diseases (Dil Ek Mandir, Saathi), finally succumbed to cancer.
